The Central Silk Board (CSB) operates an extensive and structured seed production network across India, encompassing both mulberry and non-mulberry (Vanya) silkworm sectors. This network is designed to ensure the consistent supply of high-quality silkworm seeds to farmers, thereby supporting the nation's sericulture industry. These units are regulated and managed by CSB.
Mandates:
- Maintain, multiply and supply reproductive seed true to the breeds/ traits/ characteristics.
- Production of basic/commercial silkworm seed reaching the prescribed quality standards.
- Introduce new systems/technology in silkworm seed production process.
- Guide and bring in excellence in silkworm seed production by imparting training and technology transfer.
- Implement Central Silk Board (Amendment) Act 2006, Seed regulations 2010.
National Silkworm Seed Organization (CSB-NSSO) :
- National Silkworm Seed Organization (CSB-NSSO) is a premier mulberry seed (DFLs) organization of Central Silk Board producing quality silkworm seed.
- It maintains and multiplies basic stock of authorized races true to the breed characters by following one way system of multiplication.
- It also undertakes production of authorized silkworm hybrids approved by the Hybrid Authorization Committee.
- CSB-NSSO it plays a major role in producing high quality bivoltine hybrid silkworm seed and to a limited extent Cross Breed (CB) at its Silkworm Seed Production Centres (SSPCs) to support the production of import substitute bivoltine raw silk in the country.
Basic Tasar Silkworm Seed Organization (CSB-BTSSO) Bilaspur (CG):
- CSB-BTSSO is responsible for organizing the systematic seed production and supply of tropical tasar silkworm seed, through Basic Seed Multiplication & Training Centers (BSM&TCs) operating in eight states and a Central Tasar Silkworm Seed Station (CTSSS) at Kota in Chhattisgarh.
- CTSSS is responsible for production and distribution of tasar nucleus seed to BSM&TCs for further multiplication besides maintaining germplasm of different tasar silkworm races.
- The BSM&TCs further multiplies and supply all nucleus seed as well as limited quantum to the DoSs.
Muga Eri Silkworm Seed Organization (CSB-MESSO):
Muga:
- The main mandate of MESSO is to maintain the Basic Muga stock at P4 stations for its multiplication to produce P3 seed. Thereafter, the P3 stations conduct rearing to generate seed cocoons to produce P2 seed at the same ratio of multiplication.
- In addition, the SSPCs are producing commercial dfls by procuring seed cocoons from the Adopted Seed Rearers (ASRs) to supply to farmers as well as to state department also.
Eri:
- Likewise, Basic Eri seed farm is maintaining the parental stock and produce the basic seed for the ESSPCs as well as different state department also.
- The ESSPCs are producing commercial seed by procuring seed cocoons from the ASRs. The commercial Eri seeds are mainly supplying to Uttar Pradesh and needy North Eastern states.
Oak Tasar:
The production of oak tasar silkworm DFLs is taken care by Regional Sericultural Research Station (CSB-CTR&TI-RSRS), Bhimtal (Uttarakhand), CSB-CMERTI-RSRS Imphal (Manipur), Research Extension Centre (CSB-CTR&TI-REC), Palampur (Himachal Pradesh) and CSB-CMERTI-REC T. Kullen.
